The search is over. Since Shiatsu-Ya Japanese Massage opened in November there has been no need to look any further for a truly professional and efficient Japanese-style massage.
While Shiatsu-Ya is no spa or massage parlour scented by aromatic candles, it offers something much more meaningful to those sitting at computers day in day out – effective pain relief and treatment. Shiatsu is a Japanese hands-on form of massage in which the therapist applies pressure to points on the body. In Japanese, shi means finger, while atsu means pressure, so the therapy literally translates as finger-pressure. Recognised as a licensed medical therapy in Japan, the benefits are said to be multifarious. These include headache and general pain relief, deep muscle and tissue relaxation, stress reduction, toxin removal, improved blood circulation and reduced blood pressure.A t Shiatsu-Ya, hyuga-style shiatsu massages are offered by therapist Seki Junya who has years of experience following three years of compulsory training in Japan. One session with him lasts just over an hour and is currently on offer for US$20.
The ambience of Shiatsu-Ya is more reminiscent of a doctor’s reception than a usual massage parlour. The place is very clean and modern and there is a waiting area complete with sofas and magazines. Treatments are performed on raised beds behind a white curtain. Once you’ve changed into your pyjama-like suit the therapist begins by enquiring after any ongoing ailments or recent injuries that he should be aware of. This is important to ensure you receive appropriate treatment, as some moves may not be appropriate should you suffer from a particular injury, while conversely he may be able to focus on specific problem areas to alleviate pain. As you lie on the table, the therapist begins by applying force to pressure points. This may hurt a bit, especially if you have stiff or sore muscles, but no pain no gain as they say. Therapist Junya does however encourage you to speak up if something feels too uncomfortable, though it is also likely that he will chide you for the state of your sore neck and order you to go on a holiday. In addition to applying pressure, the therapist also uses moves similar to spinal manipulation as practiced by chiropractors.
Despite the potential pain, the treatment is ultimately relaxing, and most importantly, it works. It is also reassuring to be in the hands of a professional therapist who knows how to focus on those areas of your body that need the most help. Furthermore, you walk out feeling like a load has been lifted off your shoulders and you can’t wait to go back for more.
