The beginning of July has proved a field day for friends of the arts in Phnom Penh. In the second exhibition opening this week, Cambodia’s very own photography agency Asia Motion opened its latest show on Friday Jul. 3 at Java Café & Gallery.
Entitled 'The Boat Goes, the Pontoon Stays' following a Khmer proverb, the exhibition showcases change and constancy in Cambodia as the country moves towards modernity. The exhibition features work by eight photographers and one video artist from the agency. Themes include ongoing social injustices in the face of development, global trends and fashions penetrating into Cambodia, continuation of traditional practices, as well as Cambodian communities abroad. At the opening, Java Café & Gallery treated guests to home-made sangria and nibbles. Some of the artists currently visiting Cambodia as part of Meta House’s art project were also present. The successful evening was wrapped-up with an after party projection at Maxine’s Bar.
